Can Plan B Cause Bleeding Like a Period? Should I Worry?

Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

So my last cycle started on May 21st and ended on May 25th. I had unprotected sex on May 25th and took Plan B on May 26th. However, I started bleeding on June 1st, and it feels just like my regular period. I’m now on day 2 of the bleeding, but my next period isn’t due for another two weeks. Should I be worried that I might be pregnant, or is this just withdrawal bleeding from the Plan B? I also have an OBGYN appointment scheduled for Thursday, June 6.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Based on the timeline you provided, pregnancy is highly unlikely. Plan B is effective in preventing pregnancy when taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse, and the bleeding you’re experiencing is most likely withdrawal bleeding caused by the emergency contraceptive. This type of bleeding can occur as a response to the sudden hormonal shift from Plan B.

2. However, if you are feeling very anxious, you can take a pregnancy test for reassurance. A scan is not necessary at this stage, but if you want further confirmation, you may discuss it with your OBGYN during your appointment on June 6. Keep in mind that Plan B can sometimes cause irregularities in your next menstrual cycle, so your upcoming period may be early, late, or slightly different from usual.

Thanks
