Hello Doctor,
I accidentally burned myself with cooking oil about three hours ago. The area is dark and has small bubbles forming on it. It stings a lot, and I'm not sure if I should see a doctor or just treat it at home. What should I do?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Yes, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. A burn that appears dark with blisters suggests a second-degree or possibly a deeper burn, which requires medical evaluation to prevent infection and complications. In the meantime, avoid popping the blisters, as this can increase the risk of infection. Do not apply ice, as it can cause further tissue damage. Instead, rinse the burn gently with cool (not cold) water, keep the area clean, and cover it with a sterile, non-stick bandage. Over-the-counter pain relievers may help with discomfort. It's best to have a doctor assess the burn to determine if further treatment is needed. You can schedule an appointment for a proper evaluation.
Thanks
