Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

If I have 59 diastolic blood pressure and have been feeling lightheaded on and off lately, how soon do I need to see a doctor again? I was just in the ER yesterday for heavy bleeding and chronic cough. They said they couldn't help me and never even mentioned my low blood pressure. But it was noted in the paperwork.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

To better assist you, I would like to know your age, any comorbidities you may have (such as hypertension or diabetes), the medications you are currently taking, and more details about the bleeding you mentioned. A diastolic blood pressure of 60 is not extremely low, but if you are experiencing dehydration, bleeding, or are on certain medications, it could lead to feelings of lightheadedness even with that reading.

I recommend taking the following measures:

  • Stay hydrated and ensure you are drinking enough fluids.
  • Avoid sudden changes in position, such as standing up quickly from a lying or sitting position.
  • If you feel lightheaded, sit down immediately or lean against a wall for support to prevent injury.

It's also a good idea to recheck your blood pressure after your recent health issues. If you're feeling well, you may not need to check it frequently. However, if your lightheadedness persists, please consult your primary doctor, who can provide guidance on follow-up care based on your blood pressure status.

Thanks
