Hello Doctor,
On 9/12 my SGOT level was 48 U/L and my ALT was 44 U/L. This was unchanged from 8/12. Do you have any insight as to why these levels could be slightly elevated? All other values on CMP were normal. Medications: Atorvastatin x 20+ years, Prozac, fenofibrate, blood pressure with HCTZ. No physical symptoms. No concern for hepatitis. Possible slight fatty liver disease. History of breast cancer, Stage 2A, diagnosed in 2012. Yearly oncology workup. I am glad that my levels did not increase, but am wondering why they did not return to normal.
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. Your SGOT and ALT levels are close to the upper normal limit, which can be common for individuals taking statins and fibrates. Since you have no symptoms, there is no immediate concern about these borderline elevated levels. However, it’s advisable to monitor these values every 3 months or whenever you experience symptoms.
2. As for why your levels haven’t returned to normal, it’s important to note that statins and fibrates are metabolized by the liver, and these medications can often raise liver enzymes. This is typically not a concern unless the levels exceed 10 times the upper normal limit. The key point here is that you are asymptomatic, and your levels are very close to the upper normal limit, so there is no need for significant concern at this time.
Continue your medications as prescribed and keep regular follow-ups with your doctor. I hope this helps you.
Thanks
