Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m a 22-year-old female, and for the past few weeks I’ve been feeling extremely tired and weak all the time, no matter how much rest I get. I recently found out that my hemoglobin level is a bit low. Could this be the reason for my fatigue? And should I start taking a multivitamin or iron supplement to help with this, or do I need something else?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Fatigue and weakness, especially with low hemoglobin, could indicate anemia, but it’s important to first consult a doctor for a thorough history and physical examination. Your doctor may recommend lab tests like a complete blood count (CBC), iron studies, and vitamin levels to determine the cause of your symptoms.

2. While multivitamins can be helpful, they should not replace a proper diagnosis and targeted treatment. Iron deficiency, for example, requires specific supplements, and self-medicating could be ineffective or cause side effects. Please see your doctor for accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Thanks
