Hello Doctor,
I’m a 21-year-old female with subclinical hypothyroidism, severe social anxiety, and depression. Antidepressants haven’t worked, and my doctor won’t prescribe thyroid meds until my levels are more abnormal. My symptoms are impacting daily life—any advice or alternative treatments?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
Subclinical hypothyroidism is treated when TSH levels are above 10 mIU/L with normal T4. If your TSH is below 10, thyroid issues likely aren’t causing your depression or anxiety, and thyroid medication is unnecessary. Depression and anxiety have many causes, so consider alternative treatments like therapy or different medications. If you believe thyroid issues still play a role, seeking a second opinion from an endocrinologist may be helpful.
Thanks
