Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I had my gallbladder removed two days ago and was prescribed gabapentin 100mg for nerve pain. I’ve only taken four doses so far, but I’m wondering if it’s okay to stop taking it now. Will I have any side effects if I stop suddenly, or should I gradually taper off?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

If you are not experiencing pain and feel that you can manage without the medication, you may stop taking gabapentin. Gabapentin is primarily used for neuropathic pain and other conditions, but short-term use at a low dose is unlikely to cause withdrawal symptoms. However, if you develop any discomfort after stopping, or if pain returns, consult your doctor for guidance on whether to continue or taper off gradually.

Thanks
