Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I just found out I may have this sexual condition. I was born and identified as female since birth, but I always felt like I'm more male than female. I have breasts but sometimes confuse people with my look regarding how to identify me. I always find my lower part not normal-looking because I have what looks like two little testicle sacs. I didn’t think much of it but always thought it was odd until I searched and looked at some pictures similar to what I have, and it said it's an intersex condition. I have periods almost normally, but once or twice, it stopped for almost a year.

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr.Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Intersex is a general term for a variety of natural variations in sex characteristics that don’t fit the typical definitions of male or female bodies. Some key points: Intersex traits can involve differences in genitalia, internal reproductive organs, hormone production, or chromosomes. This can include things like a larger clitoris, a penis without a urethra opening at the tip, or a mix of male and female internal anatomy.

Intersex is not a disease or disorder—it's a natural variation in human biology. Many intersex people have healthy bodies and function normally. The timing of when intersex traits become apparent can vary; some are noticeable at birth, while others may not be discovered until puberty or adulthood. Irregular or absent menstrual periods can be a sign of an intersex condition, as you’ve experienced. This is often related to hormonal differences.

The most important thing is that you are the one who gets to decide how you want to identify your gender, regardless of the sex you were assigned at birth. Many intersex people find community and support by connecting with other intersex individuals. I encourage you to continue exploring your identity and seek out resources that can provide more personalized guidance.

Thanks
