Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I don’t have money for a consultation, but I’m feeling a little anxious. Earlier today, I took four Halls cough drops, and then about four hours later, I had two glasses of wine. I know mixing them could maybe cause some dizziness, but do you think it could be harmful?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Mixing cough drops with alcohol can sometimes lead to side effects such as increased drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or mild stomach discomfort. This is because some ingredients in cough drops, like menthol or other active compounds, may interact with alcohol, slightly intensifying their effects. However, in most cases, consuming a few Halls cough drops followed by wine several hours later is unlikely to cause serious harm, especially if you are not experiencing any symptoms like extreme dizziness, trouble breathing, or a rapid heartbeat.

2. The impact also depends on the alcohol content in the wine and your overall health. If you’re feeling fine, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. But if you start noticing any unusual symptoms or feel unwell, it’s best to see a doctor just to be safe.

Thanks
