Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am concerned about HIV. I got a full-body massage with oil, and the masseuse briefly grabbed my penis. I am uncircumcised and don’t recall seeing blood on my body, penis, or towel. There was no intercourse or any other interaction. Seventeen days later, I experienced congestion, sneezing, occasional cough, and minor headaches. On day 35, I noticed slight on-and-off throat discomfort (no pain when swallowing), persistent congestion, and a small, movable, tender lump on my neck. I have had no fever, rash, night sweats, or excessive fatigue. Could these symptoms indicate an HIV infection?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Your symptoms are consistent with flu-like illnesses, such as those caused by influenza, COVID-19, or EBV. The scenario you described carries a very low risk for HIV, as it is primarily transmitted through unprotected sexual intercourse, shared needles, or direct contact with infected fluids (blood, semen, vaginal secretions, or breastmilk).

2. HIV is not transmitted via casual contact or fluids like saliva, urine, or sweat unless visibly contaminated with infected fluids.

3. If you're concerned, I recommend an HIV test. A fourth-generation test is highly accurate if done at least 2-3 weeks after exposure. Testing now can provide reassurance.

Thanks
