Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I have had this problem since I was 4 years old. Namely, for a very long time, as a result of too difficult training, a low-calorie diet, and stress at work, chronically elevated cortisol levels. This lasted for a very long time and after some time my libido and sperm production completely disappeared. I think my androgen receptors have lost sensitivity. Is there any chance you can help me?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query:

Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels can significantly impact various aspects of health, including libido and reproductive functions. Prolonged high cortisol levels may lead to hormonal imbalances and reduced sensitivity of androgen receptors, which could explain your experience of low libido and sperm production issues. Chronic high cortisol disrupts the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis, affecting testosterone production, and may also reduce the sensitivity of androgen receptors, further exacerbating these problems. Additionally, common symptoms of high cortisol, such as fatigue, irritability, weight gain, and decreased libido, highlight how this condition can cascade into broader health concerns when not addressed.

To manage this, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to assess your hormone levels and overall health through relevant tests. Stress management techniques, including mindfulness, meditation, regular physical activity, and adequate sleep, can help lower cortisol levels. A balanced diet rich in whole foods, healthy fats, and proteins is essential to support hormonal balance, avoiding excessive caloric restriction, which can worsen stress responses. Certain supplements, like ashwagandha and omega-3 fatty acids, may also be beneficial but should only be taken after consultation with a healthcare provider. In some cases, therapy or counseling may help address the root causes of stress and develop effective coping strategies. Addressing chronic stress and its effects on cortisol levels requires a comprehensive, tailored approach guided by professional medical advice.

Thanks
