Hello Doctor,
My doctor recommended a pituitary MRI because my prolactin levels are slightly elevated, but all my other pituitary hormones are normal. I’ve also had irregular or missed periods, but no other symptoms. My hormone lab results and pelvic ultrasound were completely normal. Since the MRI is expensive, I’m wondering if it’s really necessary. Should I go through with it, or can I wait and monitor my levels instead?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
An X-ray of the skull, specifically a lateral view and Towne's view, can help assess the pituitary fossa and may provide some initial insights. If the findings are inconclusive or if there is still a clinical suspicion of a pituitary abnormality, an MRI would be the next step for a more detailed evaluation. Discussing the necessity of an MRI with your doctor based on your symptoms, lab results, and imaging findings would be the best approach.
Thanks
