Hello Doctor,
I had protected intercourse with my partner for the first time on August 10, 2024. It wasn’t full intercourse, but to be extra cautious, I took an emergency contraceptive pill within 20 hours. I got my period or withdrawal bleeding on August 19, as expected. However, starting September 8, I noticed a small, watery, slightly cloudy discharge from my nipples. There’s no pain or tenderness, but it’s been happening for the last few weeks, and it only appears as a tiny dot when pressed. I’m unsure if this is normal or if I should be concerned. Could you provide some guidance on this?
Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.
1. It sounds like you have some concerns about your nipple discharge after taking emergency contraception. It’s common for hormonal changes, such as those caused by emergency contraception, to lead to minor symptoms like nipple discharge. This could be a result of the hormonal fluctuations after taking the pill. The fact that you’re not experiencing pain or tenderness is generally a good sign.
2. However, if the discharge persists or becomes more noticeable, or if you develop any other symptoms, it’s important to monitor your situation closely. Hormonal changes can sometimes affect the breast tissue, and while this type of discharge is often harmless, it’s always a good idea to get evaluated by a healthcare provider if you’re unsure.
