Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

My doctor postponed my procedure because he wanted to redo my bloodwork. He said my leukocytes were high and my iron was low. Now, I’ve started noticing bruises all over my body, and I don’t remember bumping into anything. My mom had leukemia when she was around my age. Could this be a sign that I have it too?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. Leukemia is generally not considered a hereditary condition, but having a first-degree relative who had it may slightly increase your risk. Your elevated leukocyte count, low iron levels, and unexplained bruising are symptoms that warrant further investigation. These signs can be associated with various conditions, not just leukemia, including infections, nutritional deficiencies, or other blood disorders.

2. The best course of action is to follow up with your doctor for additional tests, such as a complete blood count (CBC) with differential, bone marrow biopsy (if necessary), and other relevant diagnostic evaluations. These tests will help determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Stay in close communication with your doctor, and try not to jump to conclusions before receiving a definitive diagnosis.

Thanks
