Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I'm scared to take Propranolol because I worry it might stop my heart or that I could develop Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS). Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

1. However, your inquiry isn’t very clear, as you didn’t mention what condition you are using Propranolol for. It's important to understand that Propranolol is generally considered safe when used as prescribed. As for your concern about Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS), it is not commonly associated with Propranolol. SJS is more typically linked to other medications like co-trimoxazole (Septrin). If you experience any symptoms such as a rash, blisters, or fever while on Propranolol, you should stop taking it immediately and consult your doctor.

2. Additionally, Propranolol is unlikely to stop your heart when used properly. If you're still concerned, there are other medications that may be suitable for your condition, such as amiodarone for arrhythmias, amlodipine for hypertension, or tamsulosin for prostate issues.

3. We strongly recommend you consult the prescribing doctor to discuss your concerns and explore alternative treatments if necessary.

Thanks
