Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I am consuming one scoop of whey protein daily after my workout. I am concerned about the possible effects of consuming whey on my liver, kidney, and gallbladder. My question is: While whey protein doesn’t cause gallstones, it increases bilirubin levels, and could bilirubin cause gallstones?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Consuming whey protein in moderation and according to your body’s protein requirements is generally safe and does not pose a risk to your liver, kidneys, or gallbladder if you are healthy. For an adult, the recommended protein intake is about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. Whey protein itself does not cause gallstones or significantly impact bilirubin levels in a way that would lead to gallstones. However, excessive protein consumption can strain your kidneys and liver over time, especially if there are pre-existing conditions. Always consult a healthcare professional or dietitian to determine your specific nutritional needs.

Thanks
