Patient Question

Hello Doctor

I received the TDAP shot six years ago. Recently, I got cut with a rusty tool and cleaned the wound. Do I need a booster shot?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

While the TDAP shot from six years ago likely still provides some protection against tetanus, exposure to rust increases the risk of tetanus bacteria entering the wound. Although cleaning the wound was a good start, consulting a healthcare professional is wise. They'll assess the wound's severity and recommend a booster shot if necessary. Typically, tetanus boosters are given every 10 years, but in high-risk situations like rust exposure, it's safer to receive one sooner. Seeking medical advice promptly is crucial to ensure continued protection.

Thanks
