Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m asking for my dad. He’s currently at the hospital after having colon surgery, where a large portion of his colon was removed, and he now has a colostomy bag. The surgery took place on the 12th of this month. His stitches were removed on the 25th, but his wound seems quite large and open. The doctors are considering sending him home, but I’m concerned because the wound looks like it hasn’t fully healed yet. I would appreciate a doctor's opinion on whether it’s safe for him to be discharged with the current condition of his wound.

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

In some cases, patients can be discharged with an open wound, provided that they are stable and afebrile (without fever). It’s important that the wound is cleaned daily, and regular follow-up appointments with the clinic are scheduled to monitor healing progress. The patient will need to continue changing the wound dressing daily to reduce the risk of infection and promote healing. If your father is stable and there are no signs of infection, it may be safe for him to go home with appropriate care instructions. However, please keep a close eye on the wound and contact the healthcare team if you notice any changes, such as increased redness, swelling, or discharge.

Thanks
