Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I’m reaching out because I’ve been experiencing an ongoing issue with my gum tissue near my left canine. It feels heavy, but there’s no pain associated with it. This has been going on for months, and I’ve already visited my dentist, who said it’s nothing to worry about. However, I can’t seem to pinpoint the exact area where the discomfort is coming from, and there are no cuts or injuries that I can see.

When I press or massage that area, I do feel some relief, which is a bit strange. I’ve also noticed that after drinking a lot of water, the heaviness seems to disappear for a little while. It’s really frustrating because it doesn’t feel normal, and I’m not sure what to do next. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

Based on your description, it sounds like you may be dealing with a periodontal abscess in that area. These abscesses are often harmless, especially following a professional cleaning, but they can persist and cause discomfort.

The fact that massaging the area provides relief suggests that you might be displacing the fluid associated with the abscess. I recommend getting an X-ray of the area to better assess the situation. If the abscess continues to persist, a procedure called curettage may be advised. This involves cleaning out the infected area more thoroughly.

Thanks
