Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

Two weeks ago, my wife and I were sexually active. I didn’t enter her and didn’t ejaculate near her vagina, but she rubbed her vagina on my penis for 10 minutes. Will the pre-ejaculation fluid from my penis (not much at the entrance) get her pregnant? It’s been 2 weeks, and she hasn’t had any symptoms, but her period is delayed by almost a week. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

It’s understandable to be concerned about the possibility of pregnancy given your recent sexual activity. Here’s a breakdown of the situation:

  1. Pre-ejaculation Fluid: Pre-ejaculatory fluid (pre-cum) can contain sperm, and while the risk of pregnancy from this fluid is lower than from ejaculation, it is not zero. If any sperm were present in the fluid, and if it came into contact with the vaginal area, there is a potential, though small, risk of pregnancy.

  2. Timing and Symptoms: Since the activity occurred two weeks ago and your wife’s period is delayed by nearly a week, it’s important to consider that this timing aligns with the typical ovulation cycle for many women. Ovulation usually happens about 14 days before the next expected period, which is when a woman is most fertile.

  • Pregnancy: The most common reason for a missed or delayed period is pregnancy. If there was any chance of sperm exposure, it would be advisable for her to take a home pregnancy test for confirmation.
  • Other Factors: There are various other reasons for a delayed period that are not related to pregnancy, such as:
    • Stress (emotional or physical)
    • Weight changes (significant weight loss or gain)
    • Hormonal imbalances (PCOS or thyroid issues)
    • Lifestyle changes (diet, exercise routine)
  1. Take a Pregnancy Test: This is the most direct way to determine if she might be pregnant. It’s best to wait at least a week after the missed period for more accurate results.

  2. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the test is negative, her period doesn’t start soon, or if there are other concerning symptoms (like severe pain or unusual discharge), consulting a healthcare provider would be advisable to rule out other health issues.

In summary, while there is a slight risk of pregnancy from the activity you described, it’s essential to consider other factors that could be causing her delayed period. Taking a pregnancy test will provide clarity on this front.

Thanks
