Patient Question

Hello Doctor,

I think I might have a urinary tract infection (UTI), but I'm not sure when it's serious enough to go to the ER. I can barely pass urine, and I feel the urge to pee every 10 seconds. It's really uncomfortable, and I'm worried it might get worse. When should I seek emergency care for a UTI?

Hello

Thank you for reaching out to Dr. Galen. Please find the below response to your query.

For some immediate relief, try drinking plenty of fluids, as it can help flush out the infection. However, it's important to get a urinalysis and culture done to confirm the cause of the symptoms, as this will determine if you have a bacterial infection or potentially a sexually transmitted infection (STI) if you're sexually active.

In the meantime, urinary antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection, along with analgesics to manage the pain and discomfort. Once the results of the tests come back, a specific treatment plan tailored to the cause of the infection is the best approach.

Thanks
